Dear Parents

I spoke to the boys at Assembly today about Youth Day on the 16th and the start of Ramadan on Thursday next week:

Youth Day - to give them the historical background of the 1976 protests in Soweto that spread across the country in a way never seen before in South Africa; so that we could honour those who fought and died for equality and freedom.  But I also asked them to remember how many young people still suffer in South Africa today.  With 10 million children on social grants and many schools only achieving 60-70 matric pass rates, we cannot say that the struggle for equality is over.  Hopefully our boys’ generation will be a major part of transforming our society.

Ramadan – as Muslims begin a month of fasting we are full of admiration for our Muslim boys who participate in the Fast, something most of us would find extremely difficult to do.  But most importantly it’s the drawing closer to God and his teachings that is of major significance and speaks to all of us no matter what our faith.

So we wish our Muslim families well over the fast as they start the Holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak.

All the best to our Grade 7s as they travel to Kwazulu-Natal on Wednesday until the end of term.  May they travel safely and have a wonderful and enriching experience.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Kind regards

 GREG BROWN
