Dear Parents

Winter sports are now well underway so I would like to make a few comments on sports participation and outcomes.  Sport is always a very important part of a boy’s school culture and a very important part of most boys’ growing up.  Boys can often “socialise” or make new friends by barely even talking, just throwing or kicking a ball around.

At Bishops it is one part of school life; we want to produce healthy all-rounders; boys who have had an excellent education developing mind, body and spirit.  We want them to have exposure to every aspect of school life and develop as far as they can in every area.

School is for many boys the only period in their lives where they will play a team sport and be exposed to the excitement and camaraderie this can bring with it.  Very few boys will make a living out of sport and statistics show that less than 0.2% of the population will become professional sportsmen.  We do play in a very competitive sporting arena and our boys love to win, as do their coaches and parents.  But we need to keep this in perspective.  Boys also need to lose sometimes; they need to learn from the experience; being gracious and humble in both winning or losing, they cannot always pass properly, they will make mistakes and so on.  Teachers and parents need to support them in this process by showing them the way.  A sign at a UK school that went viral a while back says it very well:

Your child’s success or lack of success in sports does not indicate what kind of parent you are.  But having an athlete that is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient and tries their best is a direct reflection of your parenting.”

Please read this letter from Heads of Cape Town and Boland schools regarding touchline attitude and behaviour.

Enjoy your son’s winter season.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN
