FRIDAY 17 March 2017

Dear Parents

Bishops Prep is a school where many of us were happy to have experienced

a “fierce up draught of the spirit”. And that is what we celebrate today.

These were the closing words of John Gardener’s speech to the school at our Founders Day Service this morning. John will be known by countless Old Diocesans: he arrived at the Prep 78 years ago (1939) at the age of 8. He went right through Prep and College, taught at many schools including a period as Headmaster at Kingswood College. He taught at Bishops, occupied the role of Deputy Principal and was Principal of Bishops in the late 80s, early 90s.

He was at the Prep during what were known then as the war years, when most of the young male teachers left to fight with the Allied Forces and a number of teachers had to come out of retirement to fill the gaps. He recalled standing outside the front windows of Stanmore House on Friday, 1 September 1939 and hearing the announcement from the “wireless” housed in what is now the Staff Common Room, the announcement that Hitler had invaded Poland. The declaration of war followed shortly. In no time trenches were dug along the Belmont Road and senior boys formed a Cadet Corps.

He recalled the night in 1943, the night on which Canon Birt handed over the reins of Bishops to Hubert Kidd, when the stone pines lining the College blew down in a vicious storm. Their replacements planted a few months later still stand today.

Sports offered were rugby, cricket, athletics and swimming. Boxing was also a much enjoyed activity at the time (only stopped in 1987). Lutgensvale was overgrown and hardly used and swimming took place in the murky brown water of the College bath (no swimming costumes were worn!). But there were also many happy made up games on the Stanmore fields and surrounds. Desks had inkwells, Grades were called Forms and the younger Grade 8s only went to College in Grade 9.

Prep for John was clearly a time of rich experiences that included both triumphs and shortcomings: one of which, of course, was that only white boys were admitted at that stage.

He gave us a perspective on the Prep: a place which so many have passed through and left their mark and many more are, and hopefully will, leave their mark. These marks are mainly nameless but part of the richness of a school that is both traditional and dynamic.

As we look back, recognising and respecting those who came before us and made what we enjoy today, Founders Day also reminds us that staff, parents and boys are contributing to both the present and the future. As we begin another year in the life of the school, may it be, in John’s words, a “tale of ongoing development but… also of integrity and honourable aspirations”.

Pro Fide et Patria.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN
HEADMASTER
