Dear Parents

In my first assembly with the boys last Friday I reminded them of the values of the Mitre which we try to instil in them in the hope that they will use them as a guide for interaction with others and their environment:

anners
I    ntegrity
T   olerance
R    espect
E    mpathy

When asked what the most important and all-encompassing value is, they answered “respect”.  I then asked them to take respect a bit further – beyond acknowledging that we are all equal and all have the same rights as each other.  But to take it a step further and actually be interested in others in what makes them different, how their lives culturally and religiously might be different.  This does not mean that they have to be friends with everyone but be interested in others and attempt to understand them.  Difference is exciting and interesting but we so easily go to our default position and gravitate almost exclusively to the group that shares our interests and a similar backgrounds.  As I said at Prizegiving last year and introduced to the boys last year, the Zulu greeting can encapsulate all of this:   Sawubona – I see you.

We want to try to see others fully for who they are and learn from our differences.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN
HEADMASTER
