FRIDAY 28 July 2017

Dear Parents

As you know from the invitation we sent out yesterday, we have asked Justin Durandt from the Sports Science Institute to do a presentation next Thursday evening. Justin has extensive experience in the world of sport, having been the conditioning specialist for the South African Cricket, Soccer, Hockey and Olympic teams. He has also managed conditioning training for the Western Province Curry Cup team as well as the SA U19 rugby side at three World Cups. At present, he is completing a Master’s Degree in Talent Identification and Development. As a parent, Justin is particularly interested in the sports involvement and development of schoolchildren.

Worldwide there has been a lot of writing about early specialisation in sport and I have had a number of discussions with parents about this here insofar as it might affect their own children, so it is a real issue for us locally too. As you know, we encourage multiple participation in sport as well as all activities, but we need to hear from someone working in the field of development and with the top athletes in their adult years. Please do attend. I think it will be very interesting and thought provoking.

The third term is also soccer term at the Prep. Grade 1s and 2s have a soccer period once a week during the winter terms. At the Prep, we will soon start class soccer at break time, which is always very popular and hotly contested. As soon as the other winter sports complete their fixtures towards the end of August, we will begin a further month of soccer, and we encourage all boys to participate in these afternoons no matter their level of soccer experience. There will be soccer skills practice sessions, inter-house soccer and fixtures against schools, probably Rondebosch, Wynberg and Red River Primary from Manenberg. This should be a great round off to the 3rd term.

I wish our 84-strong Prep Choir much success as they join the College Music Department at the City Hall next week for our Classic Pops. This is a gala occasion which takes place only every three years and showcases the very best of Bishops music across every genre and age.

Congratulations to Grade R teacher, Carmen van Zyl and her husband, Geoffrey. Carmen gave birth to twins on Tuesday, Jean-Pierre and Eleanor. They are all exceptionally well.

Enjoy the weekend.

Kind regards

GREG BROWN
