FRIDAY 4 August 2017

Dear Parents

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

The events at schools very similar to Bishops over the past few weeks have again highlighted the importance of addressing the issues of diversity and transformation. In this regard I want to refer back to my speech at Prize Giving last year.

“In his address at College Prizegiving, the Principal reminded everyone that the Bishops Mission Statement calls us all to “respect, nurture and value each person; and to embrace and celebrate diversity in the communities of our school and South Africa”. He went on to say that as a “member of the majority culture as a white male at Bishops [he] was personally committed to making sure that [he] was sensitive to minority groups at Bishops”. Minority groups can include race, religion, gender, disability, culture and sexual orientation. While we need to be sensitive to our differences and diversity, the Bishops mission statement goes further and says we need “to celebrate and embrace diversity”. It is not enough to be diverse – we need to engage with our diversity and be enriched by it. It can be easy for a school like Bishops (even unconsciously) to expect that the minority groups be assimilated into the dominant culture rather than the majority including and engaging with diverse groups.”

It is important for our community to know that the Bishops Council and Executive across all 3 of our schools take these issues very seriously and that last year we decided to establish a Social Sustainability Committee to take us forward. This committee at this stage includes employees from the staff across all 3 schools and is diverse in terms of gender and race.

The committee has already engaged focus groups of pupils at both Prep and College to explore some of these questions. These were fruitful discussions and these conversations will continue. It is difficult to predict where they will lead us other than that they will give us a better understanding of what we need to do as a school so that every one of our pupils and employees will feel that Bishops is a more welcoming environment for all, regardless of their position, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or disability. The Social Sustainability Committee will extend the focus groups to include parents and OD’s in the future.

At the same time academic staff from all 3 schools attended a staff conference at the start of this term to engage on two topics; The Rainbow Nation Conundrum: Negotiating Privilege and Inclusivity in a post-apartheid era and “Man-Up”: Manhood and Masculinity in a boy’s school context. This was an extremely worthwhile conference with some significant testimonies from staff who represent minority groups. These conversations have been on-going and will continue in the future.

Kind regards
