A Brief History of Brooke House

Brooke House is named after Cyprian Brooke, a distinguished figure in the history of Bishops. Cyprian was the fourth son of Archdeacon Richard Brooke, who served as Principal of Bishops from 1887 to 1900. Like his father, Cyprian had a deep connection to the school—he attended Bishops as a student and later returned as a member of staff.

Cyprian Brooke achieved notable academic success, becoming part of the first intake of Rhodes Scholars in 1903, awarded in terms of the will of Cecil John Rhodes. His career began in England at Broadstairs in England, after which he proceeded to Cuddesdon and ordained in 1909 serving as a parish priest before coming back to South Africa.

He became the curate at Rondebosch and subsequently Kalk Bay.

In 1922, just a year after Stanmore House was purchased and lessons began on the Prep campus, Cyprian joined the Prep School staff. He remained there until 1951, contributing nearly three decades of service. During this time, he held several key roles:

  • House Master of Stanmore (a boarding house at the time) from 1927 until 1931.
  • Acting Senior Master.
  • Chaplain at Bishops, providing spiritual guidance to the school community.

Interestingly, the matron during his tenure was his sister, adding a unique family dimension to his service.
Cyprian Brooke's legacy of dedication and leadership is honoured through the naming of Brooke House, a lasting tribute to his profound impact on Bishops and its Prep School.
