Bishops: Diocesan College - Prep Post
FRIDAY 1 September 2017
Dear Parents

It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.
                                                                                                  – Rainer Maria Rilke

Today dawned as a truly perfect spring day; clear, crisp and all the trees trying to turn a bright green. While we are all still so worried about the lack of rain and hoping for as much late rain as possible, this morning’s bi-termly cultural assembly really encapsulated the hope and excitement of the advent of spring. Boys recited poetry in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa and also presented iMovies in all three languages. Three of our Grade 7s repeated their orals with the theme “I believe”. These were very inspiring: the one on the importance of family and friends, the other on love, kindness and respect and the last expressing a belief in the power of what every Prep boy in 2017 could ultimately become.

This is why it is such a privilege to work with young people. They look forward, bright-eyed and full of hope.

Enjoy your weekend with your boys.

Best wishes

Hamilton Mvelase Bursary Fund

Earlier this week an invitation went out to the Bishops Community for the Launch of the Hamilton Mvelase Bursary Fund.

In 1988, Hamilton won a bursary to Bishops. Those who knew him described him as a hard worker and a natural leader; he was popular with his peers and a great sportsman.

In 1991 tragedy struck. One weekend Hamilton and a friend made an impromptu decision to take a day pass home to Gugulethu. They caught a bus and were walking across a field when they were attacked. Hamilton escaped but his friend was stabbed in the leg. On seeing that his friend was in trouble, Hamilton returned to assist. He saved his friend but was stabbed in the process and he lost his life. Hamilton’s dreams were never to be realised.

It is our hope, that in celebrating this inspirational young man, it will provide opportunities for other deserving boys from disadvantaged communities to have the opportunities that Hamilton was so tragically denied.

Bursaries are a big element in the future vision of the school and thus a major component of the Bishop’s Trust’s 175 Campaign. If you are unable to attend the event and would like additional information regarding Bishops Bursaries, please contact the Trust office at or see here.
