FRIDAY 10 March 2017

Dear Parents

Use of College Facilities

I wrote two weeks ago about the new Bishops discs to be used on all parents’ cars for entrance onto the College grounds. As a school, we are concerned about the excessive use of our facilities often by people with no association or involvement with the school at all. Therefore, where you might be on the premises with your son to kick a ball over the weekend, your Bishops disc should suffice, but Security might still ask you about your purpose. There are groups of ODs and parents who play touch rugby, for instance, on a Sunday afternoon and they have to have permission to do so from the College Deputy Head: Sport, Warren Wallace The group then has to have the letter of permission with them at all times and Security has been tasked with checking on this. This might sound a bit draconian but our facilities are already used by over 1 300 boys on a daily basis so we do have to protect them from over-use or, in some cases, abuse.

Hair Regulations

I reminded the boys in assembly today that “high fashion” hairstyles are not allowed, such as the “step” and “comb over”. Hair should be neat and tidy, above the collar and ears, not too long or thick in the front. Gel may not be used. We still have three weeks of school left so a number of boys need their hair cut now to ensure it remains acceptable until the end of term.

Social Media Presentation

We sent out an invitation recently to Dr Carew’s presentation on 22 March on the effects of social media on children. I hope many of you will be able to attend this talk – she is a leading professional with a particular interest in this area. For us, as a school, it is a very important subject as more and more schools are often having to deal with disciplinary and emotional issues that involve social media, its abuse and over-use.

Enjoy the weekend.

Kind regards
